    Plant Vision

Have you ever wondered how much of the light your lamp produces is used by your plants? Plants do not use all of the visible spectrum of light, so it is important to find out just how much of the light you are producing is actually getting used!

Introducing a handy tool no indoor gardener should be without, Sun System PAR meters. These meter measure the PAR that your grow lights produce. PAR = Photosynthetically Active Radiation

    Sun System PAR Meter

    • Measures the amount of usable plant light
    • Easy to use, hand-held cordless setup.
    • Just power it on and place the sensor on level with the leaves
    • Available with sensor located on the top of the meter, or with a remote sensor for more mobility
    • Made with high quality components, 1 year warranty

Unlike humans which have eyes, plants capture light energy using pigments in their leaves, such as chlorophyll. There are many different kinds of pigments, and because each pigment absorbs a different color of light plants can utilize much of the spectrum of visible light.

Here is a chart showing the different pigments plants use and the color of light that each pigment absorbs best.

    • From the chart you can see that both chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b absorb blue light and red light most efficiently
    •  Plants are not able to use green light for photosynthesis since they do not absorb it.
    • Accessory pigments such as carotenoids and anthocyanins help capture amber, cyan and violet light, which chlorophyll cannot absorb.
    • Plants only use specific wavelengths of light for photosynthesis!
